Does Wine Really Boost Your Health?


We’ve known for a while now that red wine is thought to have health boosting properties. It’s good for your heart as it has heart disease preventative qualities, but did you know that there are plenty of other benefits, too? Here are some good reasons why the occasional glass of red wine could be good for your health.

Keep your weight down

It sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t. Studies have shown that those people who drink red wine have a lower body mass and narrower waists than those who drink liquor. It’s even been suggested that the alcohol in wine encourages your body to burn extra calories for up to 90 minutes after you drink it. This could be because the red wines that are best for your health are dry ones. These wines contain less sugar, so generally have less calories than sweet wines.

Avoid the risk of ovarian cancer

If women needed a reason to drink red wine, this is it. A study in women found that those who never or rarely drank wine were more likely to develop ovarian cancer than those who drank moderately. In fact, the risk appeared to go down by as much as 50%. This is thought to be because of the high antioxidant levels found in wine, which are naturally able to fight cancer cells.

Preserve your memory

A study was done where women in their 70’s were given quizzes, and it was found that those who had a drink a day did better than those who didn’t drink at all. Red wine has been found to help reduce the risk of blood clots and inflammation in drinkers, both of which can contribute to cognitive decline.

Develop a superhuman immune system

Ok, so you won’t be able to go around eating raw eggs, but you will feel better for drinking red wine. You can reduce your risk of developing Heliobacter pylori by up to 11%. This bacteria can cause gastritis, ulcers and stomach cancers, so reducing the risk is always a good idea. Wine can also guard against contaminants such as salmonella, reducing your risk of food poisoning.

Potentially reduce the risk of diabetes

Initial studies have shown that premenopausal women who drink red wine are up to 40% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, as compared to women who abstain from drinking. The reasons for this aren’t quite clear yet, but it’s been observed that wine reduces insulin diabetes in diabetic patients. If you have a family history of diabetes, or just want to avoid the condition, it’s not a bad idea to start drinking red wine now to reduce your risk of developing it later.
